Whole Grains: Get to know the whole story
September 01, 2017
Good food should also taste great and it can with whole grains! You may have heard the buzz about whole grains and how you should be incorporating them into your diet or you may have even noticed the whole grains sticker on products at the grocery store. But what does "whole grain" mean?
To clear things up, a whole grain is the seed of a plant and is made up of three edible parts: the bran, germ and endosperm. When a grain contains all three original parts in the same proportion as when it was growing, it is considered a whole grain. With the least amount of processing, whole grains are eaten the way nature intended!
Whole grains pack a serious punch when it comes to nutrition. These powerful little seeds have layers of benefits. Firstly, the bran, the outer skin of the grain, contains antioxidants, B vitamins and fiber. The germ, the embryo, contains B vitamins, protein, minerals and healthy fats. The endosperm, the germs food supply contains carbohydrates, proteins and a few vitamins and minerals. To top it off, people who consume whole grains regularly, lower their risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.
Just so you know, finding tasty and nutritious options is easier than you think; our OneBun sandwiches and some of our Morning Rounds that you already enjoy, contain the added benefit of whole grains (just look for the sticker)!
